The enthusiasm of Pep Parés, founder of the race, by racing sleds came with Txao, a Nordic dog which had given him.
From this came the idea of creating a race in the Pyrenees, which after more than twenty years continues with the same enthusiasm.
The name of the race comes from the goddess Pirena that appears in the epic poem L’Atlàntida by Jacint Verdaguer.
The first sleddog race was the Iditarod in Alaska, created in commemoration of an incident in 1925 when a sled had to go to the city of Nome with drugs to combat a diphtheria epidemic.
Since immemorial time sled dogs were used to move people and materials on the snow and much later this activity would become a sport.
Since the beginning the sport of mushing has not stopped growing and expanding its practice in many countries, including Spain. The enthusiasm and commitment of Pirena organization have helped; no doubt, strengthen the sport in our country.
